MURRAY, Ky. — The Murray State University Susan E. Bauernfeind Recreation and Wellness Center hosted the Thoroughbred Challenge fitness event on Sept. 26.

Sixteen participants competed in various physical activities, including shuttle runs, full-court sprints, pull-ups, push-ups, three-lap runs and squats. Dylan Christian of Owensboro won the male division and Camila de Prado of Goiânia, Brazil, won the female division. For their first place prizes, both students received a t-shirt, supplements from JB Sports Nutrition and their portraits on the Wellness Center Wall of Fame.

“The Thoroughbred Challenge is a way to promote health and fitness practices and involve students who may not use the Wellness Center,” said Christina Meinhardt, the center’s fitness undergraduate assistant.

While participants enjoyed the fitness aspect of the Thoroughbred Challenge, they also enjoyed being able to compete alongside each other.

“My favorite part of the Thoroughbred Challenge was going through the events with the same group of people,” de Prado said. “It was fun to have friends around and compete with them.”

Built in 2005, the Susan. E. Bauernfeind Recreation and Wellness Center is a 73,000-square-foot facility featuring three basketball courts, two racquetball courts, an indoor track, cardio machines, resistance weights, a lap pool and lounge. Members also have access to group fitness classes, personal training and rental equipment, including kayaks, canoes, fishing rods, tents and sleeping bags.

“One hidden gem of the Wellness Center is the outdoor equipment we rent out,” Meinhardt said. “The kayaks and canoes are very popular with students every spring.”

The Wellness Center also offers personal training, private fitness classes and group fitness programs, including water aerobics, yoga, zumba and line dancing.

An average of 4,500 members attend the Wellness Center every week. Students can use their Murray State ID for free access to the Wellness Center, while faculty, staff, retirees and alumni can purchase memberships in person or online at
