MURRAY, Ky. — Murray State University has joined Handshake, a career management platform that allows students and alumni from approximately 500 schools opportunities to network and explore prospective career paths.

“It’s really a tool to help connect students to employers,” said Matthew Purdy, director of Career Services at Murray State. He explained that as a more extensive and inclusive system, Handshake puts Murray State on the radar for more companies across the nation.

Through this service, employers post internship opportunities as well as full-time, part-time and even on-campus job openings. From any smart phone or computer, students and alumni can create profiles, upload résumés, search for and apply to listed positions.

After prolonged use, Handshake will begin curating positions based on search history and users’ favorite positions. To favorite a position, users can select the star next to the title. The app can even issue reminders when application deadlines for those favorited positions are approaching.

Murray State Career Services also uses the program to manage meeting appointments for students or alumni seeking help with their career journeys. Users need only tap a time with their preferred Career Services team member to sync the appointment to everyone’s schedules. That feature is under the “Career Center” tab.

Additionally, Career Services keeps students updated on on-campus opportunities, such as interviews with visiting companies or educational seminars.

“Whether you come into our office, you hear Career Services talk in a class, we do a workshop or you interact with us [through Handshake], we are very focused on student service,” Purdy said.
