MURRAY, Ky. — The Murray State University Office of Multicultural Initiatives, Student Leadership and Inclusive Excellence awarded five $2,000 scholarships to participants of the Dr. Marvin D. Mills, Sr., Emerging Scholars Institute for the 2018–19 academic year.
Alumnus Johnnie Green, who attended Murray State in 2002, donated the funding for the scholarships. Green also donated $10,000 in scholarship funds to the Emerging Scholars Institute in 2017.
“This scholarship has been instrumental in providing students with not only financial support but also motivation and inspiration,” said Dr. SG Carthell, executive director of multicultural initiatives. “Mr. Green mentors, motivates, encourages and tracks the progress of the students. He shares his experiences and gives them opportunities beyond college by expanding their vision.”
Recipients of the 2018–19 scholarships include Ashley Bennett of Louisville, Kentucky; Alexis Chandler of Paducah, Kentucky; Aalayah Jones of Louisville, Kentucky; Alexia Rainey of Hazelwood, Missouri; and Kevonté Turnley of Evansville, Indiana.
Scholarship recipients were recognized Aug. 17 during the Emerging Scholars Institute orientation for fall 2018 where Green served as keynote speaker.
“This scholarship is important particularly in motivating and inspiring students to be committed to the principles of the Dr. Marvin D. Mills Emerging Scholars Institute,” Carthell said. “Johnnie Green was mentored by the late Dr. Mills and the scholarship is an example of the legacy of Dr. Mills being paid forward. In some respects, Mr. Green becomes the Dr. Mills of his generation. We appreciate Mr. Green’s partnership and continued commitment to the Office of Multicultural Initiatives, Student Leadership and Inclusive Excellence, and we look forward to working with him in the future.”
The Emerging Scholars Institute is designed to address the needs of Murray State’s multicultural students by supporting their transitional experience from high school to college and by providing them resources to attain and cultivate successful scholastic and leadership skills.
