MURRAY, Ky. — Dr. George Kipphut of Murray established and endowed an annual scholarship at Murray State University to benefit students preparing for careers in the field of earth and environmental sciences.

The Alice and George Kipphut Sr. Scholarship in Earth and Environmental Sciences supports junior and senior students pursuing degrees in the University’s Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. The minimum award amount is $750 per student during an academic year with financial need and extracurricular involvement taken into consideration by the search committee.

“There are wonderful career opportunities for Murray State students with backgrounds in earth and environmental sciences,” Kipphut said. “I hope this scholarship allows more Murray State students to explore and earn degrees in these fields.”

Kipphut, professor emeritus, worked at Murray State for 25 years prior to his retirement in 2016. He established this new scholarship opportunity to promote studies in the earth sciences and to honor his loving parents: Alice and the late George Kipphut Sr. During his time at Murray State, Kipphut served as professor and former chair for what was previously known as the geosciences department. Kipphut was successful in securing a number of grants and publication opportunities over the course of his career in addition to being the recipient of several prestigious Murray State honors, including the Neil Weber Award for Excellence and the Max Carman Outstanding Teacher Award. He was twice appointed by two different governors of Kentucky as the state geographer for the Commonwealth.

“The most enjoyable part of my career at Murray State was collaborating with students in both the classroom and laboratory,” Kipphut said. “The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences has excellent faculty and facilities and promotes strong faculty-student interaction.”
