MURRAY, Ky. — Murray State University has announced three finalists for the position of associate vice president for strategic enrollment management. The successful candidate will serve a critical role within University leadership with responsibility for all enrollment management functions.

The finalists include Dr. Scott Gordon, Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky; Dr. Thomas Iwankow, Maria College in Albany, New York; and Shawn Smee, Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky.

All three candidates will visit the Murray campus between July 11–13. During the visits, finalists will meet with Murray State University President Bob Davies, University deans and other leaders, faculty, staff and students. Each finalist will also participate in a public forum open to the entire University community at 11 a.m. daily in room 118 of Wells Hall.

The finalists were selected by the search committee following a national search.

Gordon has served in a variety of enrollment positions at Western Kentucky University (WKU) since 2007, most recently serving as the manager of graduate recruitment and retention. He has also served in administrative positions at Murray State University and the University of Kentucky (UK) throughout his career.

He earned his doctorate of education from WKU in 2016 and an MFA in creative writing from Murray State University. He also earned his master’s degree in English literature and his bachelor’s degree in English from UK.

Gordon will be visiting campus Friday, July 13.

Iwankow most recently served as the associate vice president for strategic planning, grants and sponsored research at Maria College in Albany, New York. He also held the position of dean of enrollment management, oversaw strategic planning and was the Title IX deputy coordinator at Maria College. Additionally, he has held admissions and recruitment positions at St. Bonaventure University in Olean, New York; Sage College of Albany in Albany, New York; and Medaille College in Buffalo and Rochester, New York.

He holds a Ph.D. in higher education from Capella University, master’s degrees from Medaille College in New York and Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Pennsylvania and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from St. Bonaventure University in New York. In addition, he has earned a certificate in enrollment management from the Noel-Levitz Program at Capella University and completed the Institute for Educational Management program at Harvard University.

Iwankow will be on campus Thursday, July 12.

Updated July 11: The candidate scheduled to come to campus July 12 has withdrawn from consideration for this position. 

Smee has served as the director of the Office of Recruitment at Murray State University since 2008. Previously, he held administrative positions at Arkansas State University, including the associate dean of undergraduate admissions and associate dean of students.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in advertising and a master’s degree in nonprofit leadership studies. Both degrees are from Murray State University.

Smee will visit campus Wednesday, July 11.
