MURRAY, Ky. — The Murray State University Town & Gown Community Band will host a free concert June 5 at 7 p.m. outside Lovett Auditorium on the campus quad. The 90-member band is under the direction of Murray State’s Dr. Todd E. Hill and is comprised of various community members, including Murray State students and alumni.
Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be moved inside Lovett Auditorium.
Musical selections that evening will include “The Klaxon” by Henry Fillmore; the theme from “Schindler’s List” with associate professor Dr. Sue-Jean Park featured as violin soloist; “Light Cavalry Overture” by Franz Von Suppe; “The War Correspondent” by G.E. Holmes; selections from “The Music Man” by Meredith Willson; “Rough Riders” by Karl King; “Ashokan Farewell” by Jay Ungar, arr. Custer; and “My Old Kentucky Home” by Stephen Foster, arr. Ron Cowherd.
“This concert is an event that the community has continued to embrace and make part of their annual summer plans,” said Carol Brunn, coordinator for Murray State Town & Gown. “We are extremely grateful for our Town & Gown partners. It is through their support that we can provide these fantastic cultural offerings.”
This is the seventh season of Town & Gown’s sponsorship of the band, which is led by Dr. Todd E. Hill, professor of music and director of jazz studies at Murray State. In addition to directing numerous bands, orchestras and ensembles, Hill has backed diverse entertainers and jazz artists, such as Bob Hope, The Moody Blues, Doc Severinsen and Gary Morris. Hill holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in music education from Murray State as well as a Doctor of Education from Boise State University.
