MURRAY, Ky. — A Hutson Harvest Gala fundraising event for The Arboretum at Murray State University is set for Thursday, Sept. 4, from 6-8:30 p.m. at the arboretum. All proceeds from the evening will go to complete the 2014 spotlight project — a hill and pond exhibit.
Hutson Inc. is the title sponsor of the event. There will be food, live entertainment and a silent auction with various items for guests to place bids on. The auction includes framed and matted photography, jewelry, gift certificates from local businesses, trees, tickets to MSU football and basketball games, and a Nike golf shoe bag. Friends of The Arboretum memberships will also be available for purchase.
Paula Edwards is the chair of the Friends of The Arboretum at Murray State University board and a graduate of MSU. She received an undergraduate degree in English in 1986 and returned to MSU to study horticulture. She’s been involved in various aspects of the Murray State horticulture program for several years, including providing employment for students at a garden center and landscaping business she owned and operated from 2003-09.
“I believe the arboretum is an important asset to Murray State students, the local community and our surrounding region. Study after study confirms what many instinctively know — natural surroundings are vital to our emotional health. The arboretum provides a place of natural beauty in which visitors, students in particular, can decompress, exercise and receive education regarding our native flora and fauna,” Edwards said. “As lovely as it currently is, the arboretum is not yet where we, as a board, have envisioned long-term. Activities such as the Hutson Harvest Gala will aid in achieving those goals by assisting in the funding of gardens and exhibits that will increase the beauty and diversity of the arboretum for years to come.”
