This year Henderson Community College presented the Distinguished Alumni Award to the Murray State University 2+2 elementary program. The program gives students the opportunity to achieve a bachelor degree in elementary education at Henderson Community College by taking classes through the Murray State Henderson Regional Campus.

Mike Freels, director of MSU-Henderson Regional Campus, and Dr. Arlene Alexander, retired education coordinator at MSU-Henderson Regional Campus, accepted the award during the Henderson Community College graduation on Dec. 12. The program was recognized for the positive impact it has had on the Henderson community, the ability to meet nontraditional students’ needs and the easy transition for students to enter a teaching career in the local area.

“In the last 10 years, our graduates’ success in being hired in the tri-county area is remarkable. The 2+2 program gives local school officials countless opportunities to see our students in action as part of the curriculum, providing students with vital skills and knowledge and preparing them for the real world,” Freels said, emphasizing the significance of the program.

In 2000, the 2+2 education program was introduced to students, becoming an instant success for the community. The program allows students to be trained by part-time instructors and gain practical knowledge through field experience and student teaching at local schools. Since Henderson Community College and MSU-Henderson Regional Campus work together to provide this program, more students have a chance to receive quality education and complete a bachelor’s degree without leaving the area.

“The partnership between Henderson Community College and MSU-Henderson Regional Campus allows students to utilize the multiple programs offered and benefit from the educational opportunities provided each semester,” Alexander noted “By working together, the partnership created a program that has impacted numerous individuals and continues to influence the community in a positive way.”
