Murray State University will be celebrating its 2011 Homecoming Oct. 13-15. One of the event’s time-honored traditions is the crowning of the Homecoming Queen and King. Students selected for this year’s Homecoming Court include Martika Clark, Lynsey Freeman, Betsy Banks, Amber Phillips, Jill Cornell, Michael Shepherd Jr., Alexander Kursave, Casey Brockman, Buddy Sledd and Ryan Knight. Martika Clark is the daughter of George Hoskins and the late Marquetta Louise Hoskins of Lexington, Ky. She is a senior occupational safety and health major. Clark is active on campus in organizations including the American Society of Safety Engineers, Zeta Phi Beta sorority, the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and is a member of the women’s track team. She is a Dean’s List student and a Gates Millennium Scholarship. Experience in her field of study includes an internship with the Chevron USA Production Co. in Louisiana. Lynsey Freeman is the daughter of Bob and Donna Freeman of Calvert City, Ky. She is a senior liberal arts major. Freeman’s activities on campus include the Student Government Association, Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority, the MSU Mock Trial Team and the Student Law Association. A Dean’s List student, she had a 300-hour internship with District Court Judge Jack Telle. Betsy Banks is the daughter of Chip and Anne Banks and Susie and Lance Smith of Frankfort, Ky. She is a senior elementary education major. Banks is active on campus in Alpha Gamma Delta sorority, the Student Government Association, the Campus Activities Board and the MSU Dance Company. She participates in organizations related to her study including the National Science Teachers Association and the Student Council for Exceptional Children. She is a Dean’s List student. Amber Phillips is the daughter of Dwight Phillips and Betty Phillips of Hardinsburg, Ky. She is a sophomore agriculture education major. Phillips is active on campus in the Student Government Association, Alpha Zeta honors fraternity, the Agriculture Leadership Council, the Collegiate FFA, Block and Bridle, and the Agronomy Club. Jill Cornell is the daughter of Jim and Cindy Cornell of Hopkinsville, Ky. She is a senior communication disorders major. Cornell’s campus activities are Alpha Gamma Delta sorority, the Campus Activities Board, Rotaract, Future Business Leaders of America, the National Speech Science Language Hearing Association and Gamma Sigma Alpha academic honor society. She is a Dean’s List student. Michael Shepherd Jr. is the son of Mike and Tammy Shepherd of Coxs Creek, Ky. He is a junior political science major. Shepherd’s campus activities include Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, the Interfraternity Council, the Student Government Association and the Murray State College Democrats. A Dean’s List student, he is the recipient of a number of scholarships. Alexander Kursave is the son of Jeff and Lori Kursave of Paducah, Ky. He is a senior marketing major. Kursave was the 2010 Greek Man of the Year at MSU and is active in Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, the Student Government Association and is an intern with the I-Racer Marketing team. He also held an internship with the Murray Conventions and Visitors Bureau that related to his field of study. Casey Brockman is the son of Tab and Beth Brockman of Murray, Ky. He is a junior journalism major. He is captain of the MSU football team and was named the Preseason OVC Offensive Player of the Year and Preseason All-OVC First-Team Quarterback, as well as to the Walter Payton Award Preseason Watch List and The Sports Network Top 10 FCS Quarterbacks. A Dean’s List student, Brockman is active in Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and is a Campus Outreach participant. Buddy Sledd is the son of James and Carol Sledd of Paducah, Ky. He is a junior agricultural education major. Sledd is active in the MSU Collegiate FFA, and the American and International Boer Goat Associations. He is a Kentucky FFA National Officer Candidate and the Kentucky FFA Purchase State Vice President. He earned a first in state and the silver nationally in Kentucky FFA Specialty Animal Production Proficiency. Ryan Knight, from Benton, Ill., is a sophomore music education (vocal) major. He is a member of the MSU Racer Band, a Presidential Fellow, a Concert Choir member and is active in the Phi Mu Alpha fraternity. He was named the Racer Band Outstanding Rookie during his freshman year at Murray State.
