MURRAY, Ky. — The Murray State University Town & Gown Community Band will begin rehearsals on Tuesday evening, May 16 at 6:30 p.m. on the stage of Lovett Auditorium. Rehearsals will run for two hours and will continue on Tuesday nights through June.
“We would love to welcome even more folks into the group this year,” stated Dr. Todd E. Hill, director of the Murray State Town & Gown Community Band.
The band has been regularly made up of between 80 and 100 members in the past two summers. The band is made up of regional adults, college students, and high school band members at least 15 years of age who have made an All-District Band or the equivalent.
“We have a lot of great literature selected for this summer’s band, including major band works such as the “Chorale and Shaker Dance” by John Zdechlik, Ron LoPresti’s “Elegy for a Young American” (in honor of the 100th anniversary of John Fitzgerald Kennedy’s birth), and George Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess” in addition to other classic band works by Clare Grundman and others. Programs will also include patriotic selections, and stirring old- fashioned marches by Fillmore, Sousa, and many others” added Dr. Hill. “We do have a limited number of instruments available for french horn, euphonium, and tuba, (and we provide percussion), since most students could not afford these instruments playing in high school and college. To reserve those, someone would need to contact me immediately. I will say that from our current registrations, we do have need in the band for more horns, clarinets, and percussionists.”
“We’re extremely fortunate to have so many student and adult musicians passionate about performing this outstanding band literature, and I’m grateful to the Town and Gown members for supporting the community band and especially to our audience members who turned out in great numbers in our previous five seasons,” said Hill. “Players regularly come from as far as eighty miles away to participate in the group, so it can be said that it is truly serving a need in the region, and we love having them here!”
The Murray State Town & Gown Community Band’s concerts will be held on Tuesday, June 6 (on the lawn of Lovett Auditorium at 7 p.m.) and Tuesday, July 4 (in Lovett Auditorium at 8 p.m.) along with the Town & Gown Chorale as part of the 2017 Freedom Fest.
Persons interested in playing should contact Dr. Hill as soon as possible by email at email@example.com or by joining the ensemble’s Facebook page “Town & Gown Community Band” and following the registration links.
